The Leadership Grid, also known as the Managerial Grid, is a leadership model developed by Robert Blake and Jane Mouton in the 1960s. This model assesses leadership behaviour based on two key dimensions: concern for people and concern for production.
The Leadership Grid places leaders on a 9×9 matrix, where the horizontal axis represents concern for production (task-oriented behaviour) ranging from 1 to 9, and the vertical axis represents concern for people (relationship-oriented behaviour) ranging from 1 to 9.
Different combinations of these two dimensions result in five leadership styles:
a. Impoverished (1,1): Low concern for people and production.
b. Country Club (1,9): High concern for people but low concern for production.
c. Produce or Perish (9,1): High concern for production but low concern for people.
d. Middle-of-the-road (5,5): Moderate concern for both people and production.
e. Team Leader (9,9): High concern for both people and production.
The Leadership Grid Tool is primarily used to assess a leader’s dominant leadership style and to identify areas for improvement in their leadership behaviour. It helps individuals and organisations understand the impact of different leadership styles on team performance and overall organisational effectiveness.
